8 Dead, Multiple Others Wounded After Shooting at FedEx Facility in Indianapolis, Gunman Dead, Police Say
At least eight people are dead and multiple others are left wounded after a mass shooting late Thursday at a FedEx facility located near the Indianapolis International Airport, according to police.
Police spokesperson Genae Cook told reporters early on Friday that among the wounded, at least four were hospitalized, including one person with critical injuries. Two others were treated at the scene and released.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) received reports of shots fired and an active shooter around 11:10 p.m. at the FedEx facility on 8951 Mirabel Rd. Dispatches called the incident a “mass casualty Level 1” event, which served to alert emergency responders of the highly urgent nature of the situation, according to multiple reports.
The shooter “has taken his own life,” Cook told reporters. “We don’t feel that there’s an active threat to the community at this time.”
She said there were “multiple people with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds” found at the site, and others who have been moved to various hospitals throughout the area.
Anyone with family members who work at the facility who cannot be reached should go to the Holiday Inn at 8555 Stansted Drive, where the IMPD and others will be available to help, Cook said.
Jeremiah Miller, who said he works at the facility, described to WISH-TV that he saw a man “with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open.”
The IMPD held a briefing at 1:20 a.m. Friday local time at a nearby venue.
Police activity in the aftermath of the incident caused the Interstate 70 to close in both directions, between I-465 and Ronald Reagan Parkway.
In a statement, FedEx expressed condolences. “Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those who are affected. We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities.”
