Chelsea legend John Terry reveals Dennis Wise grabbed him by the throat and made him SELL new car bought with Champions League bonus
John Terry was once grabbed by the throat by former Chelsea captain Dennis Wise after buying a new car while a young prospect at Stamford Bridge.
Blues legend Terry was taught a valuable lesson by the pint-sized former midfielder, after he used a Champions League bonus to buy a flash new motor.
Just 19 at the time, Wise launched a scathing attack on Terry in front of the entire Chelsea squad and demanded he returned the luxurious item.
Terry did exactly that, and while he lost money on the car he admitted it was the ‘best bit of advice’ he ever got, with Wise advising the legendary defender to get on the property ladder instead.
“He was club captain at the time,” Terry told The Footballers Guide to Football podcast. “I remember I was in the first team and got a Champions League bonus and I went out and stupidly bought a car with the bonus I was on.
“I was 19 at the time. I come in with my car and Wisey got me up round the throat in the corridor in front of everyone: ‘Who do you think you are? Go and take the car back.’
“So he made me go and take the car back, which I lost money on, took me around and helped me find a house, buy a house, so it was the best bit of advice.
“I was embarrassed at the time but it was the best bit of advice that I could have had.
“So I’m really grateful for all those little bits along the way, guiding the younger players, and he always not only had his eye on the first team but had an interest in the younger boys.”
Terry ended up following in Wise’s footsteps by wearing the captain’s armband – via Marcel Desailly’s three-year spell as skipper – and he did even better by surpassing his mentor as Chelsea’s most successful captain ever.
