Coronavirus UK schools farce as 700k pupils have NOT returned to class yet – official data | UK | News


This includes 60,000 pupils who are self-isolating because of coronavirus. Official data from the Department for Education (DfE) shows that one in ten has not yet to returned to school. The data shows that around 700,000 pupils in England have still not returned to their classrooms since schools were reopened on March 8, according to Government figures.

Statistics from the DfE show that only approximately 89 percent of secondary school pupils were in class on March 15.

Pupils returning to schools will have mass coronavirus testing.

In primary schools, 96 percent of pupils were back in school at the start of last week.

However, this number fell to 94 percent at the beginning of this week, Monday, March 15.

The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) has warned that attendance rates will “be bumpy” as pupils return to school.

Secondary schools have been allowed the flexibility to stagger pupils returning to school.

All these returning pupils are being asked to take a voluntary coronavirus test at school.

Attendance at state schools increased from 68 percent on March 8 to 89 percent by Thursday, March 11.

Now Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, ASCL, has warned that “we are not out of the woods yet”.

Speaking to the Daily Mail he said: “Secondary schools have put in a Herculean effort to provide on-site coronavirus tests to returning pupils and deserve huge credit for setting up what are essentially medical facilities.

“They did this with very little help or support from the Government.

“However, we must sound a note of caution over what attendance levels will look like for what remains of this term because we are picking up reports of positive Covid cases and close contacts having to be sent home to self-isolate.”
