Leon Edwards breaks down in tears during emotional phone call to his mother after Belal Muhammad eye poke
Leon Edwards broke down in tears during an emotional conversation with his mother following his No Contest against Belal Muhammad for an accidental eye poke.
The Jamaican-born Brit has endured a frustrating 2020 after having his main event at UFC London against Tyron Woodley cancelled and then rejecting a last-minute title shot.
In doing so, it effectively ruled ‘Rocky’ out for a period of more than a year and ended in him losing his welterweight ranking and watching his rivals remain active.
The main event of UFC Vegas 21 was meant to provide the 29-year-old with a springboard into a potential title shot against Kamaru Usman, with No.13 ranked contender Muhammad merely meant to be cannon fodder.
Yet despite an explosive opening round, Edwards was frustrated yet again as an unintentional eye poke rendered Muhammad half-blind and referee Herb Dean waved the contest off.
Footage from the UFC captured the emotional moment Edwards spoke to his mother after the bout and was unable to contain his emotions following yet another incident depriving him of a chance to shine.
Muhammad has thankfully regained his sight after the eye poke and has voiced his displease towards the Brit for what he perceives to be a lack of respect shown.
“Man-to-man, if you’re happy with that result, then you shouldn’t call yourself a fighter,” Muhammad told MMA Fighting. “You shouldn’t call yourself a contender.
“You shouldn’t call yourself a champion. Man-to-man, if you’re happy with that result, honestly you should just hang up your gloves.”
