‘Mesut Ozil NOT among top 20 Premier League players’, but outgoing Arsenal man is voted a better playmaker than Kevin De Bruyne and Andres Iniesta
A talkSPORT Twitter poll judged Mesut Ozil to have been a better playmaker than Kevin De Bruyne AND Andres Iniesta in the last ten years… but Jamie O’Hara isn’t having it.
Ozil’s time at Arsenal is finally coming to an end as he is close to completing a move to Fenerbahce, whom he supported as a boy.
There’s no doubting the Turkish club are signing a player with plenty of talent, but the majority of Arsenal fans will believe Ozil could’ve given more to the Gunners cause during his seven-and-a-half year stay.
However the poll, which asked fans to name the best playmaker of the last ten years apart from Lionel Messi, saw Ozil claim a landslide victory – beating De Bruyne, Iniesta and Luka Modric.
It’s not clear who voted for Ozil but O’Hara was outraged by the result, saying the former Germany international wouldn’t get anywhere near the top 20 in his list of all-time Premier League stars.
O’Hara also claimed the 32-year-old’s stock only went up when he wasn’t playing but he ultimately failed to take Arsenal to the next level as was hoped when he signed from Real Madrid in September 2013.
“He wouldn’t get in my top 20 Premier League players of all time. Nowhere near,” O’Hara said on Monday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“He’s had a fantastic career and he was a maverick – brilliant on the ball and his assists when he was in his prime were very good.
“I think he’s just left a poor legacy on his Arsenal career with the way he’s been and the money he was on. He never turned up in the massive games, he never took Arsenal to another level with his performances.
“When I think of Arsenal I don’t think of Mesut Ozil; I think of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, those types of players.
“When he wasn’t playing for Arsenal, and I said this before, he actually became a better player, because when they started struggling and having a bad time everyone’s going, ‘oh, we need to get Ozil back’.
“But truthfully when he played, and Arteta did give him opportunities to play, he didn’t produce, he wasn’t great.
“He didn’t work hard enough for the team. I wouldn’t say he was brilliant.”
Meanwhile, talkSPORT host and Arsenal fan Darren Bent is also disappointed in Ozil, saying he’d rather talkSPORT’s own Ray Parlour in his Gunners team despite the huge talent Ozil possesses.
“If you put him in centre midfield and start looking at Arsenal greats, you look at someone like Ray Parlour,” Bent said.
“I look at someone like Ozil and he’s probably got more ability in his locker in terms of technique than Ray Parlour.
“But if you’re asking me to put one of them in the centre of the park for Arsenal, I’m having Ray Parlour every day of the week.”
