Israel Adesanya has answered every question of him thus far as UFC middleweight champion.
Paulo Costa was billed to be a very tough test indeed. Adesanya has always been a lean fighter, but Costa, like Yoel Romero, was built to destroy.
Costa was 13-0 when he met Adesanya, but the champion dissected the Brazilian and landed a second round finish.
While it appeared to be a masterclass from the Last Stylebender – who now attempts to win the light-heavyweight title while holding the middleweight title this weekend – Costa has claimed he may have been a little drunk during the fight.
“I was kind of drunk [when] I fought, maybe, on hangover,” Costa said in Portuguese on his YouTube channel. “I couldn’t sleep because of the [leg] cramps.
“Keep in mind that the fight happens at 9 a.m. [local time], we have to wake up at 5 to get ready, stretch, wrap the hands.
“The UFC told us to wake up at 5 in the morning to go to the arena to fight. I hadn’t slept until 2:30.
“It was my mistake and I don’t blame anyone else, it was something I chose [to do], but, in order to try to sleep, because I had to sleep since I was awake for 24 hours, I had wine, too much wine, a bottle [of wine] to try to black out.
“I had a glass and didn’t work. Two glasses, it didn’t work. Half bottle, didn’t work. I had it all.”
Well, that certainly won’t help! Only time will tell if that is an excuse or not, but Costa has said previously he should have postponed the fight and the leg cramps he was suffering beforehand were a major hindrance.
Costa is scheduled to take on Robert Whittaker on April 17 with a shot at the middleweight champion next for whomever the winner is. Adesanya may have vacated the belt by then should he win the 205lb strap.
