Rangers boss Steven Gerrard told to ‘wait a couple more years’ before taking top Premier League job amid Liverpool links as pressure mounts on Jurgen Klopp
Darren Bent has urged Steven Gerrard not to rush into a top Premier League job.
Gerrard’s Rangers are within touching distance of winning a first Scottish Premiership title since 2011 as they lead rivals Celtic by 18 points.
On top of that, the Liverpool legend has led his side to the Europa League last 16 where they will face Slavia Prague.
Gerrard is one of the bookmakers’ favourites to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield as the reigning Premier League champions currently languish in sixth place.
But Bent believes the former England captain should bide his time before managing in England’s top-flight.
He told talkSPORT: “I’d still wait a couple more years and then I’d probably take another job.
“That Liverpool job… he [Gerrard] is an absolute legend of Liverpool Football Club and the Premier League.
“It’s not like the [Frank] Lampard opportunity where that was just perfect. Him and Jody Morris, Jody Morris already knew all the kids they already had, so that role fitted perfectly.
“For Steven Gerrard, there’s time on his hands.
“I fully understand Chelsea do things differently. If you’re not doing it for six months, you’re gone.
“But he still would have looked at that Lampard situation and gone, ‘maybe not quite yet.’”
Liverpool are 19 points behind Premier League leaders Man City and have lost their last four home games.
Earlier this month, Reds fan David told talkSPORT he wanted Gerrard to replace Klopp in the Anfield hot seat after his team were thrashed 4-1 by City.
He said: “I want Jurgen Klopp to leave.
“Do you remember with Brendan Rodgers when we lost 6-1 away to Stoke City? Liverpool this season have had two terrible defeats – the 7-2 to Aston Villa and now this 4-1 to City.

“They even lost to Brighton and Burnley at home. This is a crisis but I don’t think Jurgen Klopp can solve it.
“Why did Jurgen Klopp not think what might happen if Van Dijk got injured? He should have brought in defenders on January 1.”
David continued: “I want Gerrard because Gerrard has won the league with Rangers I’d get him.
“Gerrard would get some mentality back to the team. Gerrard is a leader. We haven’t got a leader on the pitch.”
