State pension UK: Grandparents could boost sum by up to £2,340 per year – check now | Personal Finance | Finance

For grandparents, though, there are also ways to boost a state pension entitlement.

This, once again, can be achieved through National Insurance credits, although some are not aware of this fact.

Under the Specified Adult Childcare Credit rules, a grandparent or other individual who is under state pension age and voluntarily caring for a child under the age of 12 while parents work, will be able to claim.

The Government explains these National Insurance credits were introduced from April 2011.

This means some individuals will be able to claim retrospectively, and financial expert Kay Ingram, Director of Public Policy at national financial planning group LEBC, has previously estimated the credits could be worth extra state pension of as much as £2,340 per annum.
