The Test and Trace payment is designed to encourage people to stay at home and self isolate if they have been notified by the NHS Test and Trace app, which has largely been regarded a disaster since it launched in 2020. Payments are made to those who are on certain benefits or low-income support, to make sure people do not suffer financially if they cannot work due to being told to self-isolate.

Who can get the £500 payment?

According to the Government website, you are eligible for the support payment if the following apply to you:
• you’ve been told to stay at home and self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace or the NHS COVID-19 app, either because you’ve tested positive for COVID-19 or have recently been in close contact with someone who has tested positive
• you’ve responded to messages from NHS Test and Trace and have provided any legally required information
• you’re employed or self-employed
• you’re unable to work from home and will lose income as a result of self-isolating

How long does it take to get the £500 payment?

The Government has not released a timeframe for how long the payment takes to get to you, and it could differ from council to council.

However, according to Hyndburn Council in Lancashire: We aim to make payments to successful applicants within 3 working days of receiving an application providing all supporting evidence has been provided and can be verified.

“If we need further evidence or evidence is not provided at the time of the application, this might delay your payment.”

The majority of people who have applied for the scheme have been rejected, according to a recent study by the TUC.

The study, which comprised of 171 councils, found that only 36,000 applicants received the payment out of 120,000 applications.

In one in four areas, 90 percent of people were refused the payment.
